Gdansk is a wonderful city and one that many cruises stop at. It was a member of the Hanseatic League so it has those colorful buildings and features. There are more details about Gdansk and Gdynia in my book “Poland at Your Pace” which is available on Amazon. I update it every time I travel to Poland.
If you are starting at the Port in Gdynia, here is How to get from Francuskie/French Quay in Gdynia to Gdańsk Główny by train
From Ship to SKM Station
- Dock location: Your ship will dock at the Sea Passenger Terminal at Francuskie Quay (ul. Polska 1, 81-001 Gdynia).
Options to the train station:
- Walk: It’s about 1.5 km (15–20 minutes) on foot to Gdynia Główna railway station.
- Exit the port onto ul. Polska.
- Walk southwest toward the city center (you’ll pass the Pomorski Park Naukowo-Technologiczny area).
- Follow signs to Gdynia Główna (PKP) station.
2. Public Bus (we did this option) Walk to the Emigration Museum, which is right at the port. There is a bus shelter in front. Take either 119 or 133. You can purchase tickets at the stop. However, if you are age 70+, the bus is free- even for non-Polish citizens! Just hop on the bus. If a conductor comes on board, just show him identification. Get off at Dworzec Główny PKP (Main Station). You can follow this route on the app “Jakdojade.”
Gdynia Główna:, go to the SKM (Szybka Kolej Miejska) platforms.
- Buy a ticket from the yellow ticket machines or ticket windows. Price: about 7–8 PLN (≈ $2).
- Validate your ticket in the yellow stamping machines before boarding the train.
- OR download the “Koleo” app and enter your information ahead of time. Buy your ticket on this app. I did it with no problem: Starting Gdynia Glowna and ending at Gdansk Glowny.
- Look for SKM trains marked “Gdańsk” / “Gdańsk Śródmieście”.
- Trains run every 10–15 minutes during the day.
- Stay on the train until Gdańsk Główny (Main Station). Travel time: ~35 minutes
Arrival in Gdańsk
- Disembark at Gdańsk Główny.
- From here, you can walk into the Old Town (10 minutes) or use trams/buses/taxis to reach your destination.
3. UBER Ubers are available on the same app you use back home. Uber is pretty inexpensive in Poland. You can ask your driver to take you to your starting point in Gdansk
Now you are in Gdansk!
Likely, you are starting out from the really beautiful train station, Gdansk Glowny or train station. Google Maps works very well.
Here are some great places to visit!
- The World War II museum, which, IMHO, is the best in Europe.
- The Solidarity Museum- honoring the union workers who were pivotal in Poland breaking away from the tyrrany of the Soviet Union back in 1989.
- The Amber Museum- housed in a former mill
- The Town Hall- a very stately seat of government
- The Royal Way/Ulica Dluga Walk- the colorful showpiece of Gdansk, which was the heart of the wealthy Burghers’ neighborhood.
- St. Mary’s Church- giant red brick church with lots of Gdansk history
- See a more extensive description in Poland at Your Pace
If returning to Gdynia, take the train back to Gdynia Glowna and either walk, take an Uber, or find the public bus stop, which is on Jana z Kolan “Gdynia Dworzec”. The Emigration Museum is a great place to visit if you have Polish ancestors.
